Arne Slot Maintains He Feels Safe and Has Liverpool's Support Following PSV Eindhoven Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it was understandable for concerns to be asked about his future following another heavy loss against the Dutch champions.
The Reds suffered their 9th loss in 12 games, representing the team's poorest run after being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Dutch league title holders on a difficult night at Anfield.
“I feel secure, things are alright, I've received significant backing from the top,” the coach commented.
“It's important to reverse this trend and secure a win obviously but if you are working as a coach and not doing well then it's expected that doubts arise.”
He continued, “I accept my situation. It is not the first time I’ve been in a tough spot but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Conversations with The Board
When asked to provide details on his discussions with the team officials, the head coach said:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive to the team and for me and those talks happen but they don’t call me all the time of the day to say they back me.”
He mentioned, “Through standard exchanges I feel the trust. However I've not talked to them after this match so far so it remains to be seen.”
Familiar Problems and Squad Reaction
Slot lamented recurring shortcomings from his squad in their Champions League defeat, namely wasted chances and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more forthright in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the solutions. Honestly, I don’t. I’m saying that to everybody,” the midfielder said.
“It’s just not good enough. I don’t even need to wait to reflect. I’m past getting mad internally. I've reached the stage now where I simply lack the vocabulary.”
He added, “It’s hard because I play for the club I love. I'm a supporter, and I've watched Liverpool all my life.”
“In a long, long time, I've not seen a Liverpool team going through a spell like this with outcomes so bad.”
Jones finished, “But we still have the crest on our chest. And as long as it is gone, we'll continue to compete.”
“We’re going to try to help the side return to its rightful place, show everyone once more the values of this club and why it's known as the best team in the planet.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
