A uniquely yellow-colored residential building in the background assisted us locate the video.
Our team is analyzing images and video circulated this morning that show the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the images originated relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
