The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
