The Reasons Prince Andrew Has Surrendered His Official Titles – and the Implications for the Royal Family
Through a announcement issued by the royal household, Prince Andrew has declared he is relinquishing his official honors, including the Duke of York. Here are the details of what was announced – and what wasn't.
What Did the Prince Said?
Having already withdrawn as a working royal in 2019, Andrew has currently chosen to “take additional measures” and consent to refrain from using the “honor or the awards which have been granted to” him.
But he also used the statement to make a point of rejecting – as he has always done – the allegations of sexual impropriety made against him; albeit having paid out a substantial sum to settle the civil sexual assault case brought by Virginia Giuffre – an agreement in which he accepted no fault and strongly rejected all allegations of improper conduct.
There has been persistent pressure toward the royal institution over the claims against Andrew – especially since his disastrous Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis in 2019. He now claims he is acting to protect the royal family from additional harm resulting from media scrutiny.
Has the King Removed Him of His Honors?
No. And although this might be viewed as a simple procedure, it holds importance in multiple ways: first, it enables the prince to openly state to have acted honourably in support of the crown. As stated in his announcement: “I have decided, consistent with my past, to put my duty to my family and country first.”
Additionally, while he has agreed not to use it, Andrew retains his ducal title, along with the honors the Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh and the prestigious Garter role as Royal Knight Companion of the prestigious order. Like the HRH His Royal Highness honorific, they essentially become inactive.
He continues to be a prince and eighth in succession to the throne. In theory, he is also still a counsellor of state – and can stand in for the sovereign should he be overseas or ill. Although royal officials has indicated that, in practice, he will not be called upon to fulfil this role.
Nevertheless, it is telling that the prince's announcement said this choice was made “in discussion with the monarch”. There seems little doubt that, behind the scenes, the palace pushed for this in the aim of cutting Andrew loose.
Why Was He Not Formally Stripped of His Entire Honors?
To forcibly remove a dukedom would require an act of parliament, and would represent an unprecedented step publicly before the nation – it has not happened to a senior royal in over a century – that it could cause more harm to the image for the monarchy.
Andrew is also a royal by birth. When he was born in 1960, he was automatically as the child of the sovereign. This could only be changed if a royal decree was enacted by the king.
The whole process might ultimately being drawn-out, meaning the goal of swiftly resolving the issue – at least for the monarchy's interests – would not necessarily be achieved.
What Does It Mean for the Prince?

What Prompted This?
The seemingly endless series of controversies related to the prince has become intolerable for the monarch and other high-ranking family members.
His friendship with the convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has again in the headlines following revelations that the prince stated to him “we are in this together” in an email dispatched months subsequent to his assertion to have ended communication.
There have also been stories about his association with a suspected intelligence operative and, recently, extracts appeared from the book released after death of Giuffre, who died by suicide in April. She alleged Andrew “thought that having sex with me was his birthright”.
Furthermore, the king is due to undertake a significant trip to meet Pope Leo next week, when he will become the first English monarch after Henry the Eighth broke from the Catholic Church in 1534 to worship openly with the pope and leader of Catholicism. He would not desire that trip to be marred by further adverse coverage about Andrew.
What Has Been the Reaction?
Although he stated Giuffre had been “justified” by the move, her sibling Sky Roberts informed a newspaper that the prince's style should be revoked for “genuine accountability” to be done.
The anti-monarchist advocacy organization Republic has also said the action is “insufficient and delayed”, noting: “Andrew remains facing allegations of sexual misconduct and misuse of position. He should be divested of every honor and his navy rank and should face a legal probe. Not using silly medieval titles is not a punishment that fits the offences.”
